Deam Lake S.R.A., near Borden, In

Beautiful campground, nice parking pads and hitching rails on each site, or on the other NH sites the horses stay close by in the nice new barns. Shower house was acceptable, not the best nor the worst I've seen. Water near most sites, electric hook ups on every site. Beautiful view of the lake from much of the campground. Some sites are shaded, others are in the sun. Nice variety of trails, from the easy wide gravel loop through the forest around the lake, to the Dry Fork Loop along a ridgeline and through a challenging steep valley, and more. The gravel trail around the lake holds up well during the wet season, other trails may get muddy.

Barren Fork Horse Camp, near Whitley City, KY

Nice primitive campground, however there were cars (non-campers) driving through camp constantly every day we were there. The loops around camp were easy and boring, through a logged forest, full sun and no enjoyable scenery. However, the Sheltowee Trace was beautiful and made up for it. There were a few sections that had more challenging terrain and breathtaking scenery.

Mammoth Cave Maple Springs Campground, near Mammoth Cave, KY

Camp Rating:

We really enjoyed our visit to Mammoth Cave. Maple Springs campground was spacious and well maintained. The high line area was really far behind the trailer, but it was a nice safe set up. IMO, Maple Springs has the best trail access compared to the private camps where you have to ride out and back on the same section each day. We weren't expecting much from the trails based on reviews of trails in the area being flat and wide... however, we rode the McCoy Hollow trail one day and were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful scenery and challenging terrain. It was a long ride (27 miles total that day), but well worth it if your horses are fit. The other trails we rode were easy smooth terrain, but nice riding. All the trails were well maintained and well marked.

Hocking State Forest, near Lancaster, OH

Camp Rating:

The state run campground was nicer than I expected, and free. The new highlines are nice and safe, but many are on hill sides and turned into a slippery muddy mess after a day of rain. The campground had a lot of shade trees and had pretty views over the hills. There weren't many people there so it seemed spacious and quiet. However, some of the sites are really close together and it could get crowded on a busy weekend. The bathrooms were dirty, but acceptable for free primitive camping. The water pump was not working, so bring your own water. There are no dumpsters, so plan to pack your trash out. We only got to ride one day, but we really enjoyed the trails that we did see, especially the white trails. We didn't encounter any challenging terrain, but a lot of pretty scenery, rock formations and a cave.
