Well this Bethany chick said it all. She DRIVES by. That means to me and I would think anyone that could put 2 and 2 together that she has never stopped and talked to Shawn, Donna, or Brittany, or even unloaded a horse there. I actually feel sorry for her cause she don't no what she is missing. This is by far the best campground in Tennessee. Our group returns every year. My hat is of to Shawn, Donna, and Brittany for the Superb job they do for their campers and their horses.

We go to True West often . It is our favorite place to camp. Lots of great trails and the campground is kept in great condition . Shawn and Donna are always so nice. Shawn even tried to help me with my camp fire LOL I guess the wood was just to wet. But he worked hard at it. His face was all black from getting down on his hands and knees and blowing on the fire.

My experience at True West was nothing but professional and very helpful. We stayed there last fall and plan on being there this year to stay a week. The campground is extremely clean facilities are great. Not sure why someone would put a nasty comment out there about this camp ground. Maybe they should go and stay some time.

We had the most fantastic time staying at True West, Donna and Shawn are amazing and make you feel right at home. They really appreciate their customers and it is obvious. We camp lots of places and this is by far out favorite and one of the few places we continue to go back to again. The campground is very clean, safe stalls, great sites and everything you need. The trails are fabulous and Big South Fork trails are close to camp. Shawn will help you figure out a great ride no matter what you are looking for, short, long, easy or challenging. He knows his trails well. The atmosphere at this campground is truly one of being on vacation and having a ball. Great people who love their job, but be sure to call ahead and get your reservation, as they do fill up. We will not stay anywhere else! Cant wait to go back May 1, 2014.

Just did my first visit with True West and what a wonderful experience. The owners are top notch. This is the first place I have gone to where the owners help you unload. What a great help that is. The owners are so very personable and excellent customer service. The grounds, barn, bathrooms, and store are VERY clean. This is a GREAT place to bring the family. If you are driving by you don't necessarily see the campers from the road, that is one of the nice amenities is you don't hear the traffic. Can't wait to go back and I am definitely telling all my friends to go here. Wasn't too happy about the trails as they are definitely not for a beginner. No short cuts either you have to go back the way you came and wouldn't recommend riding the day after a heavy rain. Overall loved the campground and the trails. A MUST SEE AND DO FOR BOTH. And did I mention the mercantile.....WOW.

I would like to know how True West gets all of the great reviews when I pass by there every single day as I am going to work and they have absolutely NO campers. It makes no sense. The only answer I can come up with is they must making them up. And eveyone I have talked to about the place doesnt like it and they dont like the owners. Just dont understand how they get all these post when there is never anyone there

If you are looking for a good "safe" place to take your family and camp at Big South Fork, True West is your place. We have all been exposed to the "Party" campgrounds, you won't have to put up with that at True West. Donna, Shawn and Brittany make you feel more like you are visiting family and make you feel right at home. True West is located with easy access to the trails so you are not on the road. Shawn is very good and patient giving directions and giving you an idea on how long a ride will last. This was our second stay and I am still amazed at the beaty of Big South Fork. I love the campground there are 2 ponds so you will have good night sounds, my dog loves to frog watch. Thats another thing, pets are welcome so no one gets left behind! Must see for the area is Sawtooth Overlook, Hippy Cave and Eye Of The Needle, and love the O&W rail bed. Thank You Donna and Shawn for a great stay! We are planning on coming back this summer!

We had 5 star experience. My wife and I were looking for a place to take our 6 year old daughter and 3 year old son for a couple of days and camp as a family, ride horses, do some fishing, and just hang out together. We found that at True West – we stayed there in the camper and had a great experience for a long weekend. Donna and Shaun were great hosts, treated us like family. We had a great time!

We stayed in the suit, we have our 8 month old son and made things easy for us, had heat bath and an area for us to wash his bottles. This suit is very nice. The trails are easy to get to and we rode to the hippy cave, what a great trail, great views!!! Definitley recomend the place to familys or anyone looking to have a great time and great ride.

FIRST TIME- visiting True West. Camp Ground- very very neat, organized and clean camp ground! The owners made us feel like family! They helped us unload and get settled in, NEVER EVER had that to happen anywhere, they checked on us and always advised us they were there ANY time we needed anything. The horse stalls are right there in the middle with easy access and not to mention the special treats the owners left for our babies :-) to enjoy, carrots, apples and peppermint. The store is so nice, they have a little bit of everything for you or your horses. The trails are marked and are very nice as well. Beautiful scenery and alot of trails to ride. We are soooo very glad we found this place and met these wonderful people!(family) WILL BE RETURNING ALOT!!

Got down at True West later then I wanted to, once there we were treated like close friends or relatives. Shawn and Donna went out of there way to see that we were well taken care. They even went extra for us as there was a Kentucky game on that Tuesday night Shawn found it on the satellite dish and allowed us to watch on the deck with two heaters going. Will be back in spring or late summer when we can hit the trails from daylight to dusk.

My husband and I stayed at True West Campground Columbus Day weekend 2013. This particular weekend, the "Chuck Wagon" was there. I didn't really know what to expect. To be honest, I thought, "Yep, we're gonna end up paying a ridiculous price for some crappy BBQ and call it a night." Boy, was I WRONG! We paid a VERY reasonable price for our BBQ plate which had the biggest "helpins"! Then, we all gathered under the covered porch for some AWESOME LIVE (I Repeat) LIVE MUSIC!! These guys knocked it outta the park!! We even danced a little (and we don't dance te he)! I venture to say that EVERYONE there had a blast that night. Then following day, my husband, a few friends, and I rode to the Needle's Eye. You wanna talk about scenery and a heck of a ride, go there!! Before we left the campground that morning, Shawn and Donna gave us all DETAILED maps of the surrounding trails and advised us the best way to reach our destination.I was so amazed of Shawn's ability to tell me exactly what to expect (terrain wise) while reviewing the map. He knows those trails like the back of his hand! Each time we stay at True West, I fall more and more in love with the place. Shawn and Donna now feel like my very own family members. They are such humble people. One night, we even had the honor of having them over for dinner around our campfire. Donna even took me to meet her horsey companion, Trooper. That was certainly a sentimental moment I will always treasure. Now onto the facilities....That weekend, True West was PACKED to the gills! I expected to see the campground sort of unclean because soooo many people were there. You know what? Not once did I encounter that! The True West staff really kicked it in gear with keeping everything spotless the WHOLE weekend! (The warm showers, the covered porch, the barn, the wash bays, and the grounds.) So, in summary, True West has our hearts. We won't be camping at any other campground if we are in the BSF area. We love them. We appreciate them just like they appreciate all of their campers, and I am confident that anyone that chooses to stay there will feel the same way.

to the people I have yet to meet, this last Thanksgiving we traveled 7hrs. in the rain with our horses to stay and ride a few days at True West in the Big South Fork. There is no doubt we will do it again and soon. The barns and grounds were clean, their hospitality was warm from the heart and they truly wanted to help in any way they could. They may be fairly new to the community but you could tell they were making a good fit and in a small area that their located that can be a challenge. They have the right personality. Now to the good stuff, we (as in every one there) were invited to share Thanksgiving dinner; what a home cooked FEAST was laid out! We were spoiled, ride horses all day, come in take a hot shower and eat such as we did! It just don't get no better!! I'd give them three thumbs up but I don't have that many. If you haven't ridden Big South Fork you should put it on your bucket list, and add a welcome stay at their camp.

Shawn and Donna are the owners of True West. They are very friendly, warm and accommodating. Shawn met us when we came in with our horse trailer, helped us unload the horses and this is hard to believe but Shawn actually cleaned our trailer out! The day after we arrived we wanted to go out for a bite to eat, the truck started to make a loud noise and we lost all of our power. Shawn was gracious enough to drive me about 30 miles to get parts he put them on and we were on our way. They have a nice little gift shop, my friend about bought the shop out. Campground was very clean, bath house was large, well lit and very clean and set up well. Would recommend this campground to any one looking for a great place to stay. They have a trailer to rent, a cabin to rent or the Marshall's suite which is really nice and very large, looks so much better in person, the pictures do not do it any justice. Thanks Donna and Shawn for a pleasurable stay.

Had a wonderful Veteran's Day weekend at True West!! When we got there on Saturday Donna checked us in and Shawn helped us get everything unloaded, cleaned our trailer out, and then helped us get comfortable at the camper. This was our first time renting the camper and we thought it was so great that we are planning on going back for Thanksgiving and we are staying in the camper again!! The bed was really comfortable and the heat worked great!! There are pots and pans for cooking and a television and DVD player to watch after you get back from riding!! I felt very "at home" there and that is one reason that we love to go to True West!! The Veteran's Day ceremony was incredible!! We visited multiple campgrounds in Big South prior to our ride date to find one we liked. From the get go True West stands out. Their frontier design and location really caught our eye. We drove around the campground to check the place out but only for a second before we were questioned about being there which made me feel good leaving personal items and my horses there in the future, knowing that the owners were very knowledgable on who should and shouldn't be there! We reserved the cabin, which we love, and stayed for 3 days. Shawn and Donna always make you feel like you're their only guest there. Shawn went over the trails with us for as long as we had a question. It's very family oriented and pet friendly. The stalls are a good size and safe. The location of the campground is very convenient as well. We never had to trailer to a trail and we rode different trails all weekend. The trails are beautiful and maintained. I'm ready to go back! This warm, welcoming, family run campground can accommodate any size rig, has clean showers with lots of hot water, and the horse stalls are large and safe. Many miles of trails with beautiful terrain and ample water crossings to water your horse. What sets True West apart is this family is always striving to make every horse/camper experience the best it can be. No question or request is too big or small. We have been traveling to Big South Fork for about the past 18 years and when True West first opened with the 1st & 2nd owners they had a horrible reputation! Donna and Shawn have put their ALL into this place and it shows. Campgrounds are immaculate and fire rings for every campsite was a warm welcome! (Pun intended) Barns are as clean as the campsites. Our stay was 9 days and we enjoyed the trails. My only other wish was for there to be more trails leading into BSF, although Shawn is more than willing to trailer you to another trailhead but while I'm on vacation I just don't want to get up that early or maybe it's just that I am getting too old. All in all, we would highly recommend True West! Happy Trails!

They were always available if we needed anything. Stalls were big and very safe and bathrooms always clean. Great Access to the trails and if you need a drop off at a trailhead Shawn is happy to do that for you. A great camp, great trails what more cloud you ask for.

I have not stopped talking about the wonderful week I spent at True West. I Will be back next year for ten days. Well worth the trip

Best Vacation Ever!! Friendly courteous folks that go above and beyond to make your stay wonderful in every way. The campsites, barn, campground and facilities were all clean and well maintained. The staff checked on you during your stay to make sure everything was working and that you didn't need anything. They even cleaned out the back of our horse trailer and helped unload our tack! That was definitely a first. True West has direct access to trails that lead to major trailheads in Big South Fork. No trailering required. Plenty of beautiful trails to ride with destination sites along the way. We stayed 4 days and never rode a fraction of the trails. This was our first trip to True West but will not be our last.

Barn-Clean, Bathroom-Showers(hot)-Clean,Campground-Clean. The extras of helping us unload our gear, Wonderful. Shawn even cleaned out the manure in the trailer!! The stall cleaning service is great-too cheap (Shawn needs a raise), but well worth it. The trails were wonderful too. I am glad we got to experience this pleasant and relaxing horse camping trip @TWC My husband and I will definately be back to ride the other trails we did not get to go on this trip. My recent 4-day stay at True West Campground was just wonderful. We found the campground very well kept & well managed by Shawn and Donna. We liked the large clean open stalls - close water hydrants - the availability of stall cleaning equipment. We loved the clean bathhouses with lots of hot water! We took advantage of the stall cleaning service available - that was great. I loved the local craft items that were sold in the office/store. Shawn & Donna made are visit to Big South Fork a very good experience. Will we return? BIG YES!

Traveled to True West from Ohio for 5 days in early October. We were very pleased with the campground, facilities, and people here. Shawn greeted us when we arrived, helped us unload and get the horses settled. The barn was very tidy and well organized. They do not allow the horses to the camping area, all tacking up occurs in the barn. I found this to be a great idea - kept the camp area clean of horse "stuff" and "hoof holes"!!! The bathrooms were clean and the showers hot! Shawn never stopped working. He was always checking on things, running wood to campsites, cleaning, mowing, and generally running things around the camp. Even so, he always would stop and chat to get to know us and always made sure we had what we needed. Donna took us into the park and to the Hostel at Charit Creek on an all day excursion and it was a pleasure to get to know her. There is a store with essentials, ice was readily available, and even WiFi on the deck for connecting with the internet. They have put their heart and souls into this camp, and have made it a MUST DO location for trail riders. You won't regret a minute spent at this camp. The trails were great, even though the government shut down was going on we had plenty of places to ride and explore. Most of the park was still accessible. The trails are well cleared, well marked, and easy to follow with maps. We had the Trails Illustrated map and found it very helpful in addition to the maps from the campground. The camp will also trailer you out to different locations in the park, so you can ride back. With miles and miles of trails there, next time we will take advantage of this service and increase the places we can see in this park.

We have been here previously with the old owner and must say was not impressed with the new owners. We feel the guy was only nickel and diming everyone every chance that they could. Had friends that showed up early and they wanted to charge them $2 an hour until their check in time. The campground was not packed and their site was open. Was not happy with how the owner showed little respect flying through the barn with 4wheelers and lawnmowers either. Anyone with real common horse sense knows better. During one of the nights that we stayed we witnessed a horse trying to climb out of the stall and bust two boards. Ran up to inform the owner and he was not the least thankful for helping. Acted like we were bothering him. The owner was nice helping us unload when we got there and helping clean out the trailer but, it didn't feel genuine or like a "true southern hospitality thing". The campground itself was a field mine of ant hills!! They were literally everywhere. The only good thing I can say about the place is the showers were nice and hot and the barn was kept up on. The trails were beautiful as always! Will be back at the park but, not camping here.

There needs to be more stars because 5 is not enough for True West Campgrounds. From the minute we arrived-- when they unloaded our horses, tack and hay and helped us settle them in wonderful clean stalls--then they cleaned out the trailer from the 10 hour haul--then they helped us set up camp--and this was at about 9:30pm!! We arrived late due to truck problems. They found a repair shop and provided transportation to and from to fix my truck. My horse had some heat exhaustion issues on the trail and they brought their trailer and hauled me back to camp--- The Service and Hospitality at True West are off the charts. The campground is clean and has all the comforts of home. The trails are spectacular. A real Gem in the Big South Fork!! Don't miss this one!!

True West and the trails are terrific. Shawn and Donna made us instantly feel welcomed. They greet you when you pull in, show you around, get you to your stalls, and even scoop out your trailer and help get your saddles put in the barn! The stalls are terrific, big, clean and safe (a must for me). There are saddle racks to put your tack (sure makes it easier to saddle and unsaddle) They have water accessible everywhere, and bucket hooks in ea stall. Bedding is easily available as well as wheel barrels and forks. The sites are clean, and big, they have electric, water and sewer(if wanted). At the gathering spot there is even Wifi, TV, and a grill to use. They have firewood available for a reasonable price and ice. Shawn knows all the trails very well and will give you terrific directions to suit any type of ride, long, short, easy or difficult. The trails are in good shape and offer terrific views and destination rides. He even offers to haul you to the trail head to be able to ride the far away rides(just remember to tip him for gas :)We even had to call him once for a ride home after a long day. They also walk thru the barn every night and check the horses to make sure they do not look hurt, and will notify you if there is a problem (this is amazing I have never seen anyone do this). I highly recommend True West to anyone wanting a great carefree riding getaway! We will be returning, I feel we made forever friends there and great memories!

Tons of fun. And..though no one took them up on it, Shawn even had a truck and trailer parked at the hostel (13 miles later) in case any one was too pooped to make the trip back via horse back. My husband and I stayed at True West for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I found the trails to be very scenic and delightful for both myself & my green 2yr old colt. He was able to enjoy a 4+ hour ride without getting tender. The folks at True West seem to strive to accommodate their guests (2 & 4legged). When I arrived, I was greeted with friendly smiles and helpful hands that unloaded my tack, hay, grain, etc. I noticed that someone would come around periodically to make sure we were taken care of. True West was able to provide me with a stall with higher walls for my colt(a huge relief), and the campground offered wash bays with sturdy hitching post on a no-slip area. They also provided a round pen for their guests to use! What a wonderful commodity to offer ( especially for young, cold-backed,or hyper horses)! I found my campsite to be very roomy & CLEAN.It had its own firepit & picnic table! When I found time to make my way to the shower houses, I was greeted with a clean bathroom with heat/ac and my shower had amazing water pressure! (Did I mention this bathroom was clean? Probably the cleanest bathhouse I have ever been in at a campsite.) We LOOOOOOVED our stay at true west! Our only complaint was not getting to stay longer! This is our new favorite camping destination!

First, they have the cleanest facility of any campground that I have EVER been to, the bathrooms are spotless and are ALWAYS stocked with everything you need, and there is always plenty of hot water no matter how many people have taken showers, and no matter how many people are taking showers the water pressure is always great!! Second, they have the best barn of any campground I have EVER been to, with large open stalls that make your horse feel safe and secure, and you can easily see your horses from your campsite which also makes YOU feel safe and secure!! Third, the True West store is so nice, with LOTS of basic things in case you need something that you may have left behind, and LOTS of horsie gift type items that all of us horse lovers enjoy!! Fourth, True West is centrally located and they are close to SO many trails and trailheads!! No matter what you need at True West Donna, Shawn, and Brittany meet all your concerns with a smile!! They go out of their way make you and your horse feel at home, which to most horse owners is REALLY important!! Me and a couple of friends made our first trip to True West Campground in May 2013. I had heard a lot of great things about TW from Valarie Bryant who has camped several times. Donna and Shawn are awesome hosts, they take time to visit with campers, check on everyone's horse and they will even rescue misplaced (lost) riders. They had a great meal and entertainment on the weekend. I am looking forward to going back. thanks TW family for making me feel at home and a part of your family.

We arrived at True West Campground 6/9/13 stayed till 6/15/13. When we arrived we felt very welcome and they had everything in order with our reservations. Campground and stables were very clean, hook ups were well located for hooking your trailer up. Trails were easily accessed and well kept up. The campground also had everything needed, or was able to help you obtain it if you needed. I would defiantly return to this campground for my next visit to Tennessee.

My friends from Illinois and I went to True West on June 8 for a week long ride. Unfortunately while out on the trail a couple we was riding with lost their horses. The owners Donna and Shawn went right into action, Shawn hooked up his trailer and drove to the other side of the park to pick us up! They stayed up all night that night looking for the horses with an atv and called all the area campgrounds and stayed focused on finding the horses till they were found. Campground is excellent with lots of level sites that are easily accessible even for the larger rigs. If you go here you won't be disappointed.

Spent another wonderful weekend at True West and after being there three days we did NOT want to go home!! Every time we camp with Donna and Shawn we have an incredible time!! We were having such a good time that a couple friends of ours decided to come up and join us for the weekend!! Shawn was kind enough to put shavings in two more stalls for my friends horses within minutes of me telling him that they were coming out to stay with us for the night!! It is SO nice to have the True West store right there when you need something...we ran out of fire starters so we went and got one from the store, then we went and bought a citronella candle to keep the bugs away!! Whatever we needed they had just waiting for us!! I LOVE that True West is right around the corner from SO many trailheads in Big South Fork and that Shawn can tell you exactly how to get there and what kind of trail each one is!! Because there are SO many trailheads, there is a trail for every type of rider from beginner to expert!! And also because there are so many types of trails we were able to go on a trail that was a little more challenging but we were also able to tell some friends of ours about another trail that they could try because they wanted something easier to ride that day!! If you go and stay at True West you will definitely not be disappointed!! We are going back in a few weeks and we cannot wait!!

Oops, Forgot to rate the campsite. The campsites were very CLEAN, big spaces for nice size rigs, all hooks were perfect. My favorite was the hard plastic picnic tables for all our outdoor cooking. So much better than wood never have to worry about rotting. By having such a nice clean site is due to having the horses tacked up at the main barns which is good. They have saddle racks at each stall so you only have to unload 1 time for arriving and leaving. I thought that was great!!! They thought of everything. Hats off to both Donna and Shawn!!!

There are several horse camps in this area but this one would be hard to beat. Unlike some in the area, it has a clean, family friendly atmosphere.. quiet, relaxing and lots of perks. The little store is not full of gimmicky stuff but real quality horse-lover items... tack for the trail, clothing, leather items, everything. It's a blast to browse. The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful. The stable clean, organized, and well equipped. A commons area provides a HUGE covered deck area with microwave, gas grill, charcoal grill, tv and a huge outdoor screen and projector that makes outdoor movies bring back the old drive-in movie days. There is a pond full of frogs, clean, well-equipped showers/restrooms and plenty of space for any type trailer or tent. Access to Big South trailhead is very handy and the owner loves to go with you, when she gets the chance.. and makes a wonderful guide. Definitely worth a spot at the top of your list.

I have to say as soon as we pulled in to True West we were impressed. Totally shocked for them to clean out the back of my horsetrailer. That's never happened at any other place we have stayed. A big plus!!! The stalls were great they had clean shaving wagon that was filled everyday for our use. Made it so easy for us to take care of the horses. Trailhead was close so that made the riding real nice. My other favorite part was we were real close to Picket State Park 2 miles down the road. So we were able to enjoy the VERY CLEAN Beach on the warm days and hiked down to see the Twin Arches. I can't say enough about Shawn and Donna they are both definitely horse lovers and provided all our need. We loved them so much that we invited them to join us for dinner a few nights. Loved there company!! They are more than just camp hosts they are friends for life. Need more people like them.

You could not ask for any better hospitality or cleanliness of the grounds. The trails were a little rough and muddy in places because of all the rain in the past 8 days but not so rough that you were in any danger. We plan on returning in the fall to see more of the area and will deffinately stay here again.

Whenever I read the reviews of others I feel they all sum-up the general consensus that True West is truly a five star establishment. Stalls are great, camp sites are great. These things go without saying. I think what gets overlooked sometimes is the fact that Donna, Shawn and Brittany have absolutely placed their collective hearts and souls into the success of True West Campground. I feel they have achieved that goal by insuring that the every need of their guest is met without hesitation. They display that feeling of Southern Hospitality from the time you pull in and Shawn is helping with tack storage, or mucking out trailers, or helping with blown trailer fuses. Donna keeps everything else in the line of guest needs are being met. While Brittany keeps registrations rolling along. Can't say enough about the wonderful feeling of FRIEND/FAMILY atmosphere at True West. Y'all will not be disappointed.

I spent the weekend at True West w/ 3 friends. We stayed in the Master Suite which I would highly recommend to anyone not wanting to camp. The rates are more than reasonable. The rooms were spotless and very comfortable. The stalls were a good size. You have the option of cleaning your own stalls or paying a small fee to have them cleaned for you. The owners are the force behind the quality of the stay. Before we headed out for the trails, the owners reviewed the trails with us and helped us plan for the entire weekend. There are some private trails in addition to the trails in the park. We did a little of both. I would recommend heading straight to the park's trails. The riding is fantastic - rock outcroppings, water crossings, vistas, great footing w/ some rocky parts. This campground is run very professionally such that you feel right at home! I would highly recommend giving True West a try if you haven't already! I will definitely be returning!

For a small fee they will clean the stalls while you are out riding so when you get back all you got to do is rinse down your horse and put them up. This makes for a most relaxing after ride experience. The barn is well laid out in an easy access location with good size stalls. On my last visit it was a rainy day when my student and I arrived to work on the ACTHA training course set up for folks new to ACTHA. The staff were quick to help us park and unload. All staffers were friendly and helpful. The stables were spotless. We were instructed on stabling practices. The barns were fresh smelling and clean. One stabled horse had an issue and kicked out boards. The staff were quick to tend to the horse and make a fast repair. True West staffers went the extra mile to make myself and my student feel welcome. A little rain and mud was no hindrance working the obstacles. Donna walked the entire course with us, giving us advise and tips as we went along and explained the difference between CTC and AOC events. I personally have ridden the trails in and around True West prior to this visit. I do not find then either too difficult nor too easy, however, I am a seasoned trail rider so nothing much phases me on the trail. The campgrounds and staff are five star and so are the trails. Happy, friendly, helpful and welcoming! What more could a trail rider ask for? Thanks to all who helped make our time 'in training' worthwhile. My student and I will return and will join ACTHA so we may participate at True West sponsored events.

True West Campground is awesome. When I pulled up and checked in they were at the barn waiting for me and my horses. They took my saddles, my tack, water buckets, feed bags and everything needed for me stay while there. I thought I had hit the lottery. They cleaned out the trailer while everything else was being placed in the appropriate place. Easy access for my horses and saddles and everything were right there with them. They even wrote my horses names on the stalls. I was treated with the most gracious hospitality I have ever had. Donna and Shawn the owners were so welcoming to their guests, not one guests but all guests. They visited the campsites in the evening and took time to sit and talk and be the best hosts I have ever seen. They have maps at your request and if you have difficulty they will talk you through it, and even come out as they did with me. The trails are different for each trail. Some levels are harder than others and it just depends on the trail. There are trails for longer rides or shorter rides and the owners are more than welcome to help you chose a trail for the length of time you want to ride. I will be returning to True West Campground as I have never been treated so welcomed as I was there. Their store has a variety of items to chose from, they even allowed us to borrow a tool to make extra notches in a girth free of charge. The barn was outstanding and a round pen for stretching or working your horse. The accommodations was the best I have ever encountered. I rate this campground a 5 Star as it is well worth trying one time to fully understand the care and hospitality the owners Donna and Shawn have shown me and my group. Must go to appreciate it.

What a great overall experience. I rented the camper - when I arrived and checked in at "The Marshal's Office" Donna greeted me with a warm welcome and explained where my stalls were located and that Shawn would be there to meet me. Shawn helped me unload my trailer and cleaned it out and helped me with my tack, feed, and hay - got my horses all situated and comfy. Then we proceeded to the camper where Shawn showed me the way everything worked inside and how to set the heat/air and where to place any trash for pick up in the mornings. The grounds are so well kept and the pond has frogs that serenade you in the evenings. Red wing blackbirds show off their beautiful colors in flight as well as several other indigenous species. The trails were so much fun - the first time we forded rivers and it was awesome! The Laurel Fork trail was my favorite because of the many creek crossings and the foliage. Beautiful area. A thunderstorm delayed our return one day and Shawn and Donna cancelled their plans out of the area for the evening to make sure that we made it back safely. I'd recommend this campground and the hosts to anyone who wants to have a great outing. The fire ring in the evening and toasted marshmallows and food and friends - it's the place to be in Tennessee!!

True West went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Sean (Shawn?) led us on a ride so we could see most of the sights the area is known for, with caves and overlooks. He got back after a 6 hour ride and immediately got on his mower to take care of the grass around the barn area while the rain was stopped! The grounds were pristine and you felt guilty if your horse dropped some fertilizer on their grass! He helped me with my trailer at the dump station (never had someone help me with that before!) and I was able to purchase hay so I didn't have to haul so much hay in my truck. Loved the trails and the maps were easy to follow.

WOW , what a great time we had !!! Shawn, Donna and Brittany have done a great job in bringing this campground back from what was at one time a horrible reputation. They have proven to be fantastic hosts and really strive to make your stay an enjoyable one. The campground is extremely well cared for and clean. If you have not visited in a while you owe it to yourself to try true west again. The store carries a number of great gift items as well as tack and leather goods , even ice cream. While we were there they were having a cabin redone and we can't wait for the open house. Try true west you won't be sorry.

True West was a pleasure to visit. Shawn and Donna were so professional and accomodating. The facilities were awesome, and Shawn even takes your tack to your stalls and cleans out your trailer! For a small fee, he cleans your stalls while you are riding. Customer Service is definately a priority at this place. We loved Donna's funny stories! The trails were some of the most beautiful we have seen, abd Shawn knows every inch of them and was so good to tell us special things about each trail. He even offered to trailer us to another trail head. We will definately be back!

Had such a wonderful time at True West with my husband and a some friends that I decided to grab a couple more friends and go back the next weekend!!! Wonderful atmosphere - was able to get one of the campsites back by the pond - beautiful view as we sat around and talked the night away! The owners are such great hosts - helped us get the horses settled in the barn and cleaned out our trailer for us when other campgrounds had said that they wouldn't!! They unloaded our hay and tack and helped put it in the barn and then helped us get parked in our campsite! They brought the firewood right to our campsite for us!! I could go on and on about how wonderful this campground is but I think that everyone just needs to go there and experience it for themselves! No one will be disappointed when they go to True West Campground!!!

Our family of four stayed there for four days last summer. We loved the accomadations, we stayed in the two bedroom suite. We haven't riden horses in years so Donna got us all back in the saddle again. We enjoyed every day of our stay, we saw the world's biggest tree house, thanks to Donna. We also had a lazy day of just hanging out at the river, which we all loved. We hated to leave because every day Donna had something new for us to do. We had a fire every night and just hung out and enjoyed the country. We were nice and cool in our airconditioned rooms. We can't wait to go back some day. There's always something new to enjoy thanks to Donna and Shawn, it felt good to ride again and she took us to a magnificent mountain top at the end of the trails, we didn't own any horses yet we experienced the joy of riding and interacting with them at her stables. It was a whole different world down there in Tennessee and we loved every minute of it.

We had the pleasure of staying here on Thanksgiving weekend....Donna prepared a yummy turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, and then feed us again the day after, then the third day tried to feed us again, lol....my husband was missing his pumpkin pie, so Donna made us all a pie, plus a pumpkin roll!!!! DELISH!!!!! We had the pleasure of riding with Shawn for 2 days, that was also wonderful, had the BEST time with him out on the trails, I only wish Donna could have came along!!!!!! Made some new friends while we were there...lots of campfire fun, Shawn and Donna joined us one night for the campfire MOONSHINE festival!!!!LOL!!! The Campground was SUPER clean, stalls were wonderful....Bathrooms VERY CLEAN and nice!!! My favorite part was there store...my only complaint was they had to many "had to haves" and I spent to much money...LOL!!!! In there store they seem to have everything you could possible imagine!!! We had gotten there and realized we forgot a few water buckets and Shawn had let us borrow 2 of his, no pressure to buy any in the store whatsoever!!!! The trails were beautiful, you can't beat the scenery, absoultly takes your breath away!!!! Theres trails here for every rider...Can't seem to say enough good things about TRUE WEST!!!! As good as the place is now, they have plans to make it even better. My girlfriend does not like to clean stalls and she enjoyed having them do it for her for a very nominal fee. If you were there under previous owner and not impressed, you MUST go back, HUGE difference. NOW for the people in KY who don't read the rules! REALLY! I would never expect to get half to a full day of hook up for free because I chose to either not read the rules or ignore them. Nothing is free these days!! For the service you get at True West you should be thankful! We traveled 12 HOURS and had NO problem abidding by the rules. Check in is at 2pm, how difficult is that?? They even fed and watered our horses for us when we went to Nashville one day and got back late. Campsites are level and all grass which is nice. Barn is clean and open with large center aisle. Bathrooms were nice and kept very clean. I wasn't sure about having to tack in barn but was surprised it was actually better. Plenty of room for tacking and leaving tack in barn to dry over night was nice. And it keeps the campsites in nice shape.Trails were great and easy to get to. Shawn trailered us out to the Hostel so we could ride the Hatfield Ridge loop which was great with an awesome overlook, and Donna rode it with us-Nice day! O&W, White Oak, Spruce Creek, White Cliff and more were great to. Store was nice as well. Shawn, Donna, and Brittany made us feel right at home more than being customers. Also have saddle racks right by your stall with a place for your bridle and halter. No dogs around to wet your hay & feed, so you can leave those right outside your stall(s). How convenient is that! Wheelbarrows, manure forks & shovels provided along with sawdust! They will also clean your stalls for a fee if desired. Clean showers & bathroom. Plenty of hot water. Wash racks for the horses also. Covered deck for groups. Rode with the FOXTROT group for 4 days and we had a great time! Up & down hills, deep sand and rocks, you name it-they have it. Some gravel roads to follow also. The O & W bridge was pretty interesting! Crossing the river, seeing the bridge piers and riding the old railroad bed made you feel like you were going back in time. Several overlooks and don't forget to drive the "gorge"!

I have never stayed at a horsecamp that the owners went out of their way to make you feel welcome. They just didn't take your money and then not see them when you need something or info. They came around at night when things settle down for them and saw to any needs. It was nice to have grass instead of dirt at the campsite. If the shade trees were bigger it would be a perfect. Now the trails are great there also, well marked for those who go there for the first time. We had a large group and they took care of us and made our fall trail ride Super Great, Thanks True West. Owners are extremely accommodating and hospitable. Campground is incredibly clean and well organized. Barns are maintained and bug free. We spent three nights at True West over Labor Day weekend and had a grand time. Band was playing GREAT music Saturday night. Only disappointment was many trails were closed due to construction, however the owner was more than willing to shuttle a group of us to Charit Trailhead. The 20 minute trip gave us access to beautiful trails and a river crossing. Was a great experience all the way around and would recommend the campground to anyone looking to visit Big South Fork.

I am from KY and attended my first TN ACTHA ride at True West Campgrounds. I have to say that in all my riding days (I'm a senior citizen), I have NEVER had such Red Carpet treatment at ANY event. As I took my horse into the barn to a nicely bedded stall, Shawn cleaned my trailer for me! Then, he carried in all my tack, hay, feed and buckets. Needless to say, I was thrilled after a long drive (for me anyway). It was that way all weekend. The ACTHA ride was awesome - great trails, good obstacles, safety first in all things, A+++++. Saturday night we were treated to awesome food and some great music by Allen Pope and his talented side-kick, Lisa. What a show from a two-man band. On Sunday, the same help was given as I loaded up to go - Shawn carried out the tack, etc. I would go back in a heartbeat, knowing I will be safe and comfortable as a single woman. Oh, and for a very small fee, they will pick and strip your stall for you. Other amenities includes a great western store to shop in, very nice campsites with a clean showerhouse, an rv dump station to empty out your tanks as you leave, and access to all kinds of trails in the South Fork Recreation area. And don't worry about crossing "the gorge" to get there. It's a mile down and a mile up and you are through. Yes, there are 6 hairpin curves (3 down, 3 up), but if this old woman can navigate it easily, anyone can!

The new owners are friendly, accomodating and helpful to all attendees! While they may sound a little funny hailing from the Yankee states, their hospitality is all Southern. The campground and bath houses are clean and easily accessable. There was never a wait. The stalls are visible from the campground and if you get a stall on the campground side, you can easily keep an eye on your horse! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

What a GReeeeeeeeaaaat weekend! ACTHA event was very well thought out, and challenging. I don't think a hoop has ben made yet that Donna and Shawn can't jump through. I have stayed at many campgrounds, but never one like this. These two truly put the rider and horse first/ This is pretty much a pull in, uinload, kick-back. and leave your worries at the door. Also, the entertainment was terrific. If y'all get a chance to see or hear Adam Pope, he is worth the price of admission. For a two piece band, it was the most fun I've had in awhile. It's all in the details! Sean & Donna at TRUE WEST did NOT disappoint. We have been looking for a "Family" horse adventure/get away at BSF since last year and we finally FOUND IT - TRUE WEST is truly a GREAT getaway for horse lovers of all ages. We ride with our 4 kids, ages 12, 10, 8, 6. From the moment we arrived till the moment we left, True West delivered and exceeded all expectations for comfort and convenience. We chose TRUE WEST because of the reviews we read online and we are glad we did. 2 of our 6 horses threw a shoe before we were able to step foot on the trail. I called TRUE WEST enroute and Sean ensured the Problem was solved in time for us to unpack, get settled, and still get an 8 mile ride in on the East Laurel Overlook trail. Kids loved the ride and Dad felt like hero, thanks to the last minute magic of a local farrier. We stayed up late, watched the beginnings of a meteor shower with my 10 year old at the campfire, and enjoyed roughing it (NOT!) in the Marshall Suite with couches, beds for all, and a hot shower. Sean helped us load and unload EVERYTHING and with 6 of us, that's alot! Donna was a great friend on the trails and joined us as she says she doesn't get to ride as much as she would like, at least that's what she told us, she was probably more worried about us and our wild bunch to see if we would ever return or still be wandering around BSF. I could keep writing, but will cut it short. If you are looking for a GREAT horse vacation - short or long, look no further because Sean and Donna of TRUE WEST understand how to serve up some serious customer satisfaction. Keep the potluck dinners going too! We'll see you soon!!!!! Pat, Denise, Jacob, Joshua, Danielle, Amanda, Chick, Elmer, Tyler, Caesar, Coco, and lil Mav...

Our group had a wonderful stay at True West. We arrived late at the campgroud and the owners were still waiting up for us. They both helped with getting the horses stalled and everything unloaded. Also, one of our horse's shoes came off while riding and the owner made arragements for a farrier to come out and replace that shoe. The store was also convent when needing ice and other camping supplies. I would recommend this site to other trail riders. Big South Fork trails are very easy to access from this campground.

The new owners are awesome, the guest's having a nice time is top on their priorities from cleaning out your trailer without you even asking to just generally being so very pleasant and helpful. Definitely would love to go again. Note: You must go on a lot of gravel roads to get to the trailhead, and if your horse is barefoot, you might need boots. Trail was beautiful, I would consider it a 'moderate', not 'easy' trail, as did everyone in my group. About a 3 hour ride for us, at the walk. Very enjoyable !

Whatever you need, just ask. Whatever suggestions to make things better, just tell it. Both Donna and Shawn have earned my respect as to what it takes to make a business succesful. Commitment to the rider, horse, and the community. Long conversations with the Martins show that thier interest does not stop at the front door it extends into helping make a better community in general. None-the less. And since she didnt want to go through the trouble of dividing it out to the rest of them she just charged it all on us. wow how lazy. then she said she came up short on ice the weekend we stayed and blamed it on us. This was our first visit to True West, had a great time, the campground was clean, bath houses very clean, they go out of their way to make you feel comfortable when you arrive, and also come by and check to see if everything is OK once you've settled in. Very sociable people. Shop is nice, carry enough of the basics and some gifty items too. The trails are easily accessable across the street ( not a busy road ) and are great for all levels of riders. The barns are nice and roomy, you can ride your horse right in them. The owners are new and are willing to ask and listen to suggestions to make the place even better. We were glad we went and will definitely be back.

We have been spending our Memorial day at True West since it opened and have always enjoyed it but with Shawn, Donna and Brittney oh and Blake as hostesses our stay was exceptional. The hospitality and horspitality they show their guests is individualized with true concern.(who else would clean your trailer out and carry your tack and feed into the barn) No matter what your need from stalls to campsites they are met with a smile and expediately. A stock trialer is available if you feel the need to be trailered to different trailheads which makes the trip even more appealing to us. We consider the True West owners as not only wonderful people but friends. Thank you The Bennefields (Tim and Debbie)

The best and most hospitable campground I have ever stayed at. I did not show up until midnight Shawn and Donna both helped me unload all my tack, hay, buckets, grain and helped me get horses into the stalls, he even filled the water buckets for me. Shawn then cleaned out my trailer. They even helped me back into the site and helped me level the trailer and hook everything up. The next morning I was happy to see that I was in the cleanest campground I have ever been in, the bathrooms are really nice. I have camped all over Big South Fork and this is by far the best place to stay. The campground is the best centrally located spot to all the trails, cleanest facillity, the best open covered stalls and I could see my horse from my site. I will now only stay at True West when I visit BSF. Can not wait to go back.

Wonderful campground, where can you go that the owners meet you and help you unload your trailer. They go out of their way to make you feel at home. I read some of the previous post and its sad when people know the rules and do not want to abide by them. If you dont want to pay to strip your stall then do it yourself.

We don’t typically reply to comments because we understand that as much as we try, we cannot please everyone and everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, we did want to reply to the Sanders group mostly because we were called dishonest. We take pride in the cleanliness of our campground, bathrooms, barns and the quality of our service. As in every other campground, stall picking & stripping is the responsibility of the horse owner. We make sure every guest understands this and it's posted in the barns. We also take care to let everyone know we can provide this service for you for a minimal fee. This service is optional and if you opt not to take advantage of it, then we should expect not to have to do it after you leave. If we do then, as posted, you are charged for the service we’ve now provided. We are honest people, and we work hard to provide you a great place to camp. We do not make these calls lightly, or for just a shovel full of sawdust because we know that retaliation is sure to follow – and it has. Regardless, this does not diminish the level of our efforts. We are true to our word – always have been, always will be. We are sorry that you’re unhappy we called in regards to our service to your stalls.

camp was very clean and sites were very large, plenty of room. had a great time with the exception of the phone call from the owners. we cleaned all of our stalls (13) and it wasn't good enough. They claimed we need to scrape all the way down to the dirt. my husband inspected stalls and there could not have been more than a shovel full from all. She more or less accused my husband of not being truthful and she had pictures and a camera in the barn. we requested the pictures but i seriously doubt we will recieve. they are going to charge us additional expense for cleaning -- it is sad because our group spent $1200.00 on sites and stalls (very large group.) Due to their dishonesty we will not return. sorry you lost our business over a shovel of dirt!

We are so glad we choose this campground. We have never felt more welcome, the hospitality was unreal, the campground was neat and clean, shower house was superb, great stalls. Donna, Shawn, and Brittany are the most accommodating people we have ever encountered. So if you are looking for a place to go with great hospitality, True West is the place for you. We will return. This was my 3rd camping trip to True West Campground, the 1st visit under the new ownership, and what a difference it makes!! I've stayed at other campgrounds in the area and none compare to the quality of facilities that True West has to offer. Although some of the other campgrounds in the area may offer the same facilities, True West differs in the quality of their campground. The barns for your horses are superb! Wide isles, big stalls with saddle racks, bridle racks, and hooks inside the stalls for water, at each stall. Level gravel floors in the barn. At least 2 wash stations. And if you're are like me, enjoying your vacation, the owner, Shawn, offers daily stall cleaning and stripping for a small fee so you can enjoy and relax instead of working. The grounds and facilities are impreccably clean and groomed. Campsites are wide, clean, and level. 2 ponds offer fishing, and general relaxation, there is even a small dock to fish off at one of the ponds. The merchantile is stocked with everything you could need. We really enjoyed just shopping around in the merchantile at gifts and tack. Although there is plenty of camping supplies should you have a need. The trails at True West are directly across the road. There is absolutely no problem crossing the road or accessing the trails. And like all the trails at BSF, they are the BEST!! The trails offer something for everyone, easy moderate, and challenging. And the owners were very knowledgeable about the trails and directions. The owners are absolutely the friendliest, nicest people I have encountered as a campground host. We truly felt as if we were camping with friends. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by Shawn the owner who helped us unload our horses and tack and even cleaned the trailer for us!! Who else offers that kind of greeting?! After a long drive, this was most appreciated! Shawn, Donna, and Brittany truly know how to make a horse camping trip most enjoyable! I can't wait to return to visit and ride with my new friends again!! Visit True West, it is hands down the best choice for horse camping in the BSF area. I will camp nowhere else!

Because of their FB posts, we have been wanting to come get in on the fun! Well, we were not disappointed! Shawn, Donna, and Brittany were very friendly and helpful from cleaning out our trailer and helping unload our stuff to pleasent conversation through out our stay. The Marshal's Suite was very clean and comfortable, the horse barns were spacious and safe, the mercantile was appropriately supplied, and, of course, the trails in the BSF are the best! We will return and encourage others to visit as well!

We had the BEST experience at True West Campgrounds. The facility is everything you could ask for and more. The owners ( Shawn & Donna ) went ABOVE & BEYOND to make our trip GREAT. They gave us awesome trial directions. The barn was laid out great and CLEAN. The bath-houses were EXCELLENT- hot, hot, hot water with lots of pressure-they were SUPER CLEAN unlike anywhere we’ve ever stayed at before. We came in Saturday after a long hard ride, which was breath-taking, only to have dinner waiting on us as we celebrated Cinco-de-mayo together- GOOD TIMES. The General Store was fully stocked and had everything you could have ever need, we were able to get some great looking t-shirts as great reminder of our adventure. I would recommend everyone to give True West a try, you’ll not be disappointed. It may be 200 miles away from where we live, but we WILL be back first chance we can. Thanks again Shawn/Donna/Brittany for a GREAT weekend.

We had a wonderful experience at True West Campground! When we arrived they cleaned out our trailer and unloaded our hay while we got the horses settled! The barn was beautiful, well kept with large isle ways and well lit stalls! The stalls were a very nice size and were clean and had new shavings in them, we were also lucky to be able to get shavings for free when we needed them, which I have never heard of at any other campground!! The bathrooms are the cleanest I have ever seen at any campground!! The campites are large and well kept! The trails are right across the street! Overall our stay at True West was wonderful and I would reccommend them to anyone :)
