One of the best riding areas I have experienced to date. I would suggest everyone put this on you bucket list if you come this area.

My all time favorite place to ride my racking horses. Just wish I lived closer or someone please open a campground for horse and rider. I would go more often if I could camp.

Hitchcock does have some easy areas but there are may trails that will challenge you and your horse. You have to get off the beaten path and explore the side trails which many are not marked on the maps. The Palmetto Ride is a very nice trail with lots of different terrain on the one trail. Don't let the flat sandy trails near the entrance area on Dibble Rd fool you. There is much to be seen and done here. The horse community should show their appreciation for this jewel by joining The Friends of the Woods to keep it operating.I've been riding here for about 10 or 11 years and still don't know all the trails.

Hitchcock Woods is not a park but a Trust. Only hoses, horse drawn carriages and foot traffic is allowed. Since it is privately held the City of Aiken cannot put in stables or campsites. The terrain changes dramatically from one side of the "park" to the other. Very flat on the west side but much more hilly on the east, such as the Palmetto Trail. Most people do not realize the City of Aiken does not own it and do not donate to the Hitchcock Foundation.

Beautiful place to ride. Avoid during hot summer months. Aiken could make a lot of money if they would put in a campground for horse people.
